Painted Mysteries: Interpreting great paintings

Unicorn Publishing

This 160-page book was a delight to design, with its stunning imagery (sourced via Wikimedia) and a theme that fascinates me, but it threw up several knotty little challenges, from working out how to make black leader lines work across areas of very dark colour within the paintings to creating a grid that was both rigorous and flexible enough to accommodate unlimited image shapes. Working directly with the author gave me an unusual degree of autonomy over design decisions as we worked together with a shared vision. The book is set entirely in Scala Sans Pro – elegant simplicity.
