Birds: Magic Moments

New Holland Publishing

This book was effectively a showcase of the work of Finnish wildlife photographer Markus Varesvuo, so I hung the page layout on the premise that his beautiful photographs should not be cropped. To this end, I designed a complex grid that allowed for as much flexibility in the use of the imagery as possible, and I wanted every other detail on the page to be discreet, to allow the photos to sing. This use of the grid naturally engineered a large amount of white space. The chapter openers are hardly more prominent than any other spread, using a very subtle background tint with the name of the new chapter appearing as an emboldened version of the running foot, so as not to interrupt the flow. For this book I also designed the cover, which is not a given.
